I'm curious.....my family isn't very into my tattoos....my mother actually loathes them. I'm less beautiful and look like white trash because of them. I don't think that any of my blood relatives would be able to identify me solely on my tattoos, if somehow I was killed and my head was missing or something (yes, morbid, I know...). My husband could, all of my friends, but not my family. Would your parents, siblings, grandparents, etc. be able to identify you if they could see only your art and not your face?

Not morbid at all. I've had my tattoo's for about 5 or 6 years and my parents only saw them for the first time a couple of months ago and the first thing my Dad said, "If you ever loose your head in an accident we could still identify you by your tattoo's!".

As for the only people who could identify me would be my partner and a good percentage of my friends and co-workers and maybe my nephew if he still remember picking off my tattoos. The family, parents and sisters, know I have them but nothing else.

my mom, my sister, brother, significant other and quite a respectable handful of friends could, say, identify me through a simple piece of (tattooed) skin that got away from an all-consuming fire. My father would be clueless. He'd probably say, "No it can't be her! She doesn't have any tattoos! I should know, i'm her father!"
Do you think it'd be morbid if, let's say i died, and my b-friend wanted to keep the skin where my geisha is (or any of the other tattoos) and cure it the way they cure leather and put it to good use? (like a lampshade). Is that weird? it probably is.

I've actually thought about having my skin removed for preservation, after all it will be quite an investment over the next 20-40 years! I know for a fact my mother couldn't identify me solely on my tattoos. She knows I have them but tries not to look at them and has no idea what they are, where they are, or why I have them. My dad has seen my shoulder caps enough to probably identify me, and I think my brother could identify me based on some. We'll see if my mom's opinion changes.....I'm planning a piece with 3 portraits - mom, her mom and my dad's mom.....the 3 most beaufitul and influental women in my life! I figure that may get her attention.

All my family could because they have seen them. Actually it was my grandfather who saw my full back tattoo first. After the session I went home and showed my back and said 'look what I got'.

Everyone i know could identify me on my tats alone.
Hey Jessica and other who's find negative reactions from people, it seems really sad that you have to put up with these negative reactions, especially in today's society, that is so much more open than years ago. I am very lucky in that i have a family that is accepting in everything that they are faced with, it saddens me to hear that people are still very much affected by what other people do, and find the only way to put that across is in a negative way.

Yeah, it is kind of sad. I hate having to feel like I care what people think, I don't really, but it's sure a lot more fun when people are not just neutral but enthusiastic about it. Because it's nearly all I think about some days! I am still amazed that my personal choices as far as tattoos, piercings, etc. can be so offensive to a total stranger. Oh well.

yes, my closest family members could identify me on my tattoos alone. my mom, my sister, my kids and my ex-husband...oh, and my dad...i show them all the second i get work done.

that's so sad!my mom scoffs everytime i get a new tattoo or piercing, but she still accepts me for who i am...everyone else in my family just shakes their heads and laughs...even when i tattooed my face! i wish all families would be as understanding as mine...

My immediate family could (my mother begrudingly) and my friends but that's about it. The rest of my family still doesn't know I'm tattooed

Certainly my wife can, as well as my mother and brother. Beyond that, I don't think many other family members could at all... my father has barely seen my thigh.

As a strange aside, when I got my FAA medical certificate renewed last year, the doctor noted all my tattoos in his records. When asked why, he said that it was for identification purposes if I was in a plane crash. Lovely.

Oh well Ryan, at least you know that someone will be able to ID you, so you see tattoo's are good for something other than incredible art, cool.

It depends if my arm was removed or not. I have a stylistic portrait of my sister on my left arm but I don't think my mother would recognize me by my back or chest pieces really. My dad would, with or without an arm and so would all of my siblings and a bunch of my extended family. Oh and of course my husband would recongize me :)
