Think about things that interest her or reflect her personality. Vanishing tattoo, tattoo johnny, google images, are places that can get your mind flowing with ideas. Sometimes I can see something that will trigger an idea and then I sit down with artist and converse about what I want it to mean to ME.

Mmmmm....maybe let her pick? I would never suggest that another person choose my tattoo, unless I decided I wanted to leave it up to the artist. That's the one and only exception I would make, and only for the perfect artist.
i hear you jessica. i wouldn't want anyone 2 tell me what 2 get either..we've been procrastinating 4 a while now and haven't come up with anything. we're bothing getting something, cause i wanna add. i don't know if it should be the same piece or different but similar styles. i'm gonna sit down with her and check out those sites, thanks sheila

It took me 3 years to decide what I wanted for my first tattoo. The first one is a big decision, probably more so than any subsequent tattoos. If she can't think of a design, maybe she could think of what things are important to her, talk to the artist and have a nice, TRUE piece of custom work! Always better that way anyway, heaven knows you won't see ME running around with any flash tattoos...all custom work here!

Oh, I don't know that it's fair to say that most of us are embarrassed of our first tattoos. Probably far from it. I love mine, BECAUSE I was wise and waited until I knew what I wanted.
I agree with Grosz as well about not forcing the timing of it. She'll know when the time is right!! :)

My first was a 27 and I feel like now at 37 I really have come to appreciate the art and do more planning and want those large scale pieces. If she isnt sure maybe she should wait til it comes to her naturally or she will see something that will inspire her and she will say "thats it!"
I would also hate for her to regret her 1st ink and then be covering it up one day.
also my $.02 worth:)
I have to agree with both jessica and jude. I was about 33 when I started getting inked. I had always wanted one but wasn't quite sure. I went to every tattoo website I could find and then the links from those. It took me months to finally find a piece that even though it was flash it was something near and dear to my heart and I would always cherish it no matter how old I got. Now it seems like it takes me forever to get a new tattoo. Once I entered the wonderful world of tattoos and started to do history and research meanings of symbols, animals etc it took/takes me longer to make my decision and be confident. When I walk into the artist's shop I can convey my ideas and know that I don't have to settle for anything less than the best.

My first piece might have been a flash piece that was changed up a little, but I still love it. I wa 18 and wanted a tattoo, and so I got one! Great memories, and not a bad tattoo either.
To the OP, make sure your sister does not feel rushed and let her choose what she wants. If she is not sure, just wait. There is a lot to think about!
