How 'bout "you don't seem like the type to have a tattoo."
I went to a staff summer social where there was swimming -- had my shirt off -- a bunch o' people were ogling me with amazed looks on their face, like, "we've worked with this guy for years, and we never knew!" Well, duh, I'm not in the habit of going bare-chested at school!
A few nice comments ("that's an awesome tattoo!") but one nitwit with the "you don't seem like the type." Okay, what _is_ the type? Should I be a biker? A gang member? Sorry, I'm just a humble science teacher, and yeah, I have a great big tattoo on my back -- get _over_ it!

AARRGG!! I've gotten that one a thousand times too Gordon, it drives me insane!
I was pretty open with the people I work with about my plan and I was happy to show them when I got new work done (except my charge nurse, she's from Taiwan and has a problem with tattoos). Quite a few of the women I work with have tattoos of their own, all covered by scrubs though, very hush hush. I think I'm the record holder for "most coverage" at this point. Just the other day a girl that works evenings said she was thinking about getting a tattoo (I know her but don't work with her often), the other girls that work with her said she should talk to me and it went like this
"You should talk to Judy, she knows more about it than I do"
"Why should I talk to her?"
"Well, most of her back is tattooed"
"JUDY HAS TATTOOS!!!!, She doesn't seem like the type!!!!!
Of course it doesn't matter that she's looking to become "THE TYPE" as well.
That made me laugh... they should post a sign on tattoo artists' studios saying: "WARNING: If you go through with this, you will become 'The Type.' This could have serious consequences for your social life and work relationships, not to mention your patience with people who ask seriously dumbass questions."
I get that as well, if I say to someone "Oh, yeah I have tattoos" I often get the response of "No you don't"
I mean WFT? Oh, sorry. Guess I was mistaken. I must have IMAGINED all those hours of repeatedly being stabbed at. Silly me, I guess if you say I don't then that must be the way it is. Ugh. I only get it with people who don't know me very well though
I'm about to become a science teacher which means my dress is going to go from normal to ultra conservative and it also means that I won't be talking about my artwork in my place of work - guess I'd better get used to the "you're not the type" comments as it looks like they're only going to get more frequent...
It's ok Alex....I'm "not the type" either as I've always portrayed myself as the good girl. But I'm FINALLY starting to get use to living a double life, which is basically how I see it. The good girl at work, and ME the wacky one when I'm not at work! Keeps people guessing and on their toes ;)
Well sounds like I sure have something to look forward to!!! lol
When the weather finally (if ever) turns warm again it'll be the first time I'll be going out with very visible tattoos. Especially on my arms (and my legs if they're done in time.) Reading all of your experiences is helping me prepare. :-)
Gee...can't wait to hear what kinds of comments I get about my bare breasted lady...

If you are a new member to Inked, Inc. may be a good time to read through Marisa's list of Cliches. I've noticed a lot of "tat" and "gun" comments from some newer folks, and, well.....just read the blog. Mmm k? :)
