I'm in the midst of a job search and I find myself thinking a lot about how conservative I should be in revealing my tattoos on interviews and such. Does anyone have an opinion on this or any stories to share?
well, i think we all got tattoos knowing full well that not everyone takes a liking to them, in particular, our grandparents, mothers, and HR departments. if its a conservative field you work in, its smart to feel cover up i think, and feel out your co-workers to see how they might react to knowing about them. unfortunately, there are still a lot of people who only see ink, and dont see potential...so, until that changes more its safer to keep some things to ourselves.
What's your field? Is your art going to be easily noticed while on the job?
I'm currently a blank canvas, but in talks with several artists about what I want. I teach at a seminary, so anything I get will probably need to be hidden.
I agree with Sarah. Universities can be very accepting (and your students may think you are cool), but HR departments and administrators can be less so.
