Part of the reason why I came across this site, is because I was searching for Law Oriented Tattoos. I work in business and law, I'm in law school, I mostly enjoy law oriented history or types of events/books/conversations and plenty parts of the U.S. government and our constitution get me excited. I am thinking of getting a law oriented piece, to mark my journey through law school and my profession and career path thus far. Right now my first choice is incorporating the words Voir Dire into the piece. (It is latin for "to tell the truth".) It is simple, I realize, but there is something said for telling the truth, and it is a motto I carry always with myself.

My questions are: Do you have any law oriented tattoos?
And if so what?
If you do not have a law tattoo, would you ever get one? If so of what?

Do you have a career/ profession oriented tattoo?

Thoughts and/or opinions on getting your career/profession tattooed on to you?

I don't know what you do in medicine, but a bunch of med school buddies actually got internal organs tattooed on themselves. One is going into internal surgery, he got his guts tattooed on him with a scalpel lost inside of it and all. Medicine is easy, you have some great gooey visuals to work with.

I *was* going to get a career oriented tattoo. I'm a court reporter, and although it's just my job, I plan on doing it until my hands fall off and really like it. I thought there would be nothing cooler than getting a quote tattooed on me in steno, but unfortunately, that wouldn't work out because the letters would be too small and would turn into blobs in no time, LOL. I've still been trying to think of another good court reporting tattoo I can get, but nothing has really come to me yet. Although the idea of a cool antique 1920's steno machine is seeming like a pretty cool idea, if I can somehow find a picture of the exact one I want!

i got a tattoo at the start of law school and one when I passed the Bar but none of them related to law.

I like the Voir Dire idea. I once made a joke about putting 'res ipsa loquitur' on a boob but tattoos are not good for jokes because you see the punchline over and over again and then it's just cheezy.

I see my own tattoos as more decorative, even those small ones that marked special legal moments, so I dont think I'd ever do something quite literal in terms of law.

A justice pin-up girl actually could be nice in the hands of the right artist.

I guess you just find something that speak to you.

Speaking of a justice pin-up girl, Tim Orth has done one with a description of the justice theme (mature):

I believe this one is a legal theme as well:

I suspect many of my tattoos will be related to my profession (I am going for my fist consult on Tuesday on one of them). Most of my ideas have some biblical imagery or other ancient Near Eastern theme.

Biblical imagery is ripe for tattoos whether one is religious or not, and I have a lot of skin. I have a few ideas that I might never wear (due to subject matter), but that I think would make very interesting tattoos for someone more bold than I. I will probably start a blog about tattoo ideas from the Bible soon.

Paul Acker did an amazing Lady Justice piece.

I've thought about getting a career oriented tattoo. Being an English teacher there are many options, but I'm trying to decide on the right idea. I've seen a few Edgar Allan Poe portraits that are very good, and I've often joked about getting a portrait of Shakespeare.

Hi there, just wanted to say that I found your question as I was also searching for law-related tattoos on the web. I am looking to do a Lady of Justice on my arm, as I am a lawyer, have been for 16 years, and probably will be for another 20. I do believe it can look good, and will not be too soppy, if done correctly. I intend to have the Lady modernised, and in a pin-up style. Go to the artwork of Greg Horn, and you will see a rendition of the She-Hulk as the Lady, which is the type of thing I am looking for.

Good luck!

Yes, I have a law oriented scale of justice covered burning book on my right sleeve. Very appropriate for a criminal defense attorney who believes the constitution is under attack from the right.

Recently I've been flirting with the idea of getting a law oriented tattoo. My initial thought was that it might not be a great idea considering the career. I believe it will be fine so long as it is in a spot that will not be seen, as many people have eluded to. I was thinking about the term "Stare decisis." Which as I'm sure most people know means to stand by that which is decided, and refers to higher courts placing standards that lower courts must follow.

I'm not sure what I want to incorporate into it though, I would like it to have some type of artwork behind it. I'm focusing on the idea of a gavel. I would like to expand on the idea though and work out something a bit more elaborate without making the tattoo too large and / or cluttered.
